about
Dr Das of Asian Dub Foundation remixes our song Frank Brazil in his unique Dub Noiz style in order to commemorate and pay tribute to Udham Singh Shaheed aka Mohammad Singh Azad aka Frank Brazil. July 31st 2017 marked the 77th death anniversary Udham Singh, who travelled to England in 1934 to assassinate Michael O Dwyer in revenge for the Jallianwallah Bagh massacre. In our minds, no one could have better suited to remix Frank Brazil than Dr Das. In a way, for us it means things come full circle for us. As it happens, we first learnt about Udham Singh through the Asian Dub Foundation song ‘Assassin’ released in 1997. (link: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDPy0JozNpA)
Dr Das’ dubnoiz approach transforms the original murder ballad into stripped down militant dub version. "Dubnoiz" as he calls it, employs a minimalist approach - both instrumentally and compositionally - using only electric bass, percussion and noise elements to satisfy all the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic requirements of the music. There is more emphasis on noise and distortion rather than the now traditional dub elements of echo and reverb. As such, it immediately sounds more militant and more provocative. In true dub fashion, the track utitlised only snippets of the original vocal in order to make way for sound intself and sonic texture to become strong carriers of meaning.
